Zum Lesen · For reading

Es ist Samstagvormittag auf dem Markt. Der Kaffee kostet drei Euro neunundneunzig, das Brötchen fünfundsechzig Cent. Das Café öffnet um acht Uhr und schließt um halb zehn. Um halb elf treffen wir uns vor dem Café.

It is Saturday morning at the market. The coffee costs three euros ninety-nine, the roll costs sixty-five cents. The café opens at eight o'clock and closes at half past nine. We meet in front of the café at half past ten.

How German builds numbers, money and hours

null · eins · zwei · drei · zwölf · dreizehn · neunzehn · zwanzig · dreißig · neunzig · hundert · einundzwanzig · zweiundzwanzig · dreiundsechzig · ein Euro neunundneunzig · zwölf Euro fünfzig · Es ist acht Uhr · Es ist halb drei · Es ist Viertel nach acht · Es ist ein Viertel vor neun · Es ist zwanzig nach sieben · Es ist fünf vor halb · am 5. Mai · im Januar

Four things hold this lesson together: the order of the parts of a number, money, the clock, and dates. Read the German line first — every rule below is shown on the left and explained on the right.

One word up to twelve — and the tens

null · eins · zwei · drei · vier · fünf · sechs · sieben · acht · neun · zehn · elf · zwölf · zwanzig · dreißig · vierzig · fünfzig · sechzig · siebzig · achtzig · neunzig · hundert
Up to twelve, every number is a single word. From twenty to ninety the tens are one word too, and they end in -zig — with dreißig as the one exception, which keeps its s. From seventy on the z is gone: siebzig, achtzig, neunzig. Hundert is one hundred. On the phone you read every digit on its own: 0171 is null eins sieben eins.

From 21 on, the ones come first

einundzwanzig · zweiundzwanzig · dreiundsechzig · neunundneunzig · einunddreißig
English puts the tens first — twenty-one, sixty-three. German puts the ones first and joins them with und: ein-und-zwanzig, drei-und-sechzig. The teens are the exception and stay one word: dreizehn, vierzehn, fünfzehn, sechzehn, siebzehn, achtzehn, neunzehn. One more detail: eins becomes ein in a compound — einundzwanzig, einunddreißig.

Money: euros first, then cents

ein Euro neunundneunzig · zwölf Euro fünfzig · zwölf Euro und fünfzig Cent · zwei Euro dreißig · ein Cent · zwei Cent
A price is written with a comma, not a point: 12,50. Spoken, you say the euros first and then the cents: zwölf Euro fünfzig. You may add und and the word Cent: zwölf Euro und fünfzig Cent. With one euro or one cent, use ein: ein Euro, ein Cent. To ask for a price: Wie viel kostet der Kaffee?

The clock: halb and Viertel move the hour

Es ist acht Uhr. · Es ist halb drei. · Es ist Viertel nach acht. · Es ist ein Viertel vor neun. · Es ist zwanzig nach sieben. · Es ist zwanzig vor acht. · Es ist fünf vor halb.
For the whole hour say Es ist acht Uhr. For half past, German names the hour that is coming: halb drei is 14:30, not 15:30. Nach means after and vor means before: Viertel nach acht is 08:15, ein Viertel vor neun is 08:45, zwanzig vor acht is 07:40. Fünf vor halb means five minutes before half past twelve, so 12:25. The verb stands first: Es ist halb drei. A question starts with the question word: Wie viel Uhr ist es? Um wie viel Uhr beginnt der Kurs? Wann beginnt der Kurs?

Dates: im month, am day and month

heute · morgen · gestern · am Montag · am Wochenende · am 5. Mai · am fünften Mai · im Januar · im Februar
Days of the week take am: am Montag, am Wochenende. A date is an ordinal number plus the month, and the month always comes after the number: am 5. Mai. All twelve months are masculine — der Januar, der Februar, der Mai — so the month never changes its ending. For a month on its own use im: im Januar, im Februar. And heute, morgen, gestern are today, tomorrow, yesterday.

The numbers from zero to nineteen

null · eins · zwei · drei · vier · fünf · sechs · sieben · acht · neun · zehn · elf · zwölf · dreizehn · vierzehn · fünfzehn · sechzehn · siebzehn · achtzehn · neunzehn

Read every number from zero to nineteen as one single word. Watch the teens: dreizehn, vierzehn, fünfzehn, sechzehn, siebzehn, achtzehn, neunzehn — they all end in -zehn, and none of them puts an und in the middle. That only starts at twenty-one.

The tens, hundert and the first compounds

zwanzig · dreißig · vierzig · fünfzig · sechzig · siebzig · achtzig · neunzig · hundert · einundzwanzig · dreiundsechzig

The tens from twenty to ninety are one word each, and they end in -zig — except dreißig. From seventy on the z disappears: siebzig, achtzig, neunzig. To build a bigger number, put the ones first and join them with und: dreiundsechzig is sixty-three.

The clock: the phrases you need

Es ist acht Uhr. · Es ist halb drei. · Es ist Viertel nach acht. · Es ist ein Viertel vor neun. · Es ist zwanzig nach sieben. · Es ist zwanzig vor acht. · Es ist fünf vor halb. · Es ist halb zwölf.

Two words do most of the work: nach (after) and vor (before). Halb and Viertel move the hour, so read the table twice — once for the German, once for the clock. Fünf vor halb is five minutes before half past twelve, so 12:25. Halb zwölf is 11:30, because German counts the hour that is coming.

The months, the preposition and the date

im Januar · im Februar · im März · im April · im Mai · im Juni · im Juli · im August · im September · im Oktober · im November · im Dezember

All twelve months are masculine — der Januar, der Februar, der Mai — so the form never changes. Use im for a month on its own, and am for a day: am 5. Mai. The number comes first, and you may also say the day as a word: am fünften Mai.
