Adjektivdeklination

The endings on the adjective in front of the noun

What you will be able to do

Put the adjective in front of the noun and give it the ending that belongs to the article in front of it: der alte Mann, ein alter Mann.

Zum Lesen · For reading

Die Nachbarin sucht eine kleine Wohnung in Regensburg. Das sind die Vorteile: eine helle Küche, ein ruhiger Flur und ein großer Balkon. In meinem Lebenslauf schreibe ich, dass ich zuverlässig und freundlich bin.

The neighbour is looking for a small flat in Regensburg. These are the advantages: a bright kitchen, a quiet hallway and a large balcony. In my CV I write that I am reliable and friendly.

How the adjective gets its ending

Der alte Mann. Die alte Frau. Das alte Haus. Die alten Autos. Ein alter Mann. Eine alte Frau. Ein altes Haus. Keine alten Autos.

Lesson 14 promised you this one: German can also put the adjective in front of the noun, and there it takes an ending — that comes later in the course. This is that lesson. The article in front of the adjective decides the ending: der, die and das give -e, ein gives -er, -e or -es. Five rules below, and one exception: after ein the noun stands without an article of its own.

The adjective in front of the noun takes an ending

Das Brot ist frisch. Ein frisches Brot riecht gut. Der Brief ist kurz. Ein kurzer Brief passt in die Tasche.
This is the second form of the adjective that Lesson 14 announced. In front of the noun the adjective changes with the article that stands in front of it: ein frisches Brot, ein kurzer Brief. Behind the noun nothing changes. Das Brot ist frisch. Der Brief ist kurz. Both keep the simple form of Lesson 14, with no ending at all.

After der, die and das the adjective ends in -e

der grüne Baum, die weiße Wand, das alte Fenster, die hellen Lampen.
The definite article der, die or das always gives the adjective -e in the singular: der grüne Baum, die weiße Wand, das alte Fenster. In the plural it gives -en: die hellen Lampen. So after a definite article there are only two endings to learn: -e and -en. The gender of the noun does not matter here — der, die and das all behave in the same way.

After ein the adjective ends in -er, -e or -es

ein großer Garten, eine kleine Kammer, ein neues Buch, keine neuen Regenschirme.
The indefinite article ein follows the gender of the noun: ein Mann, eine Frau, ein Haus — and the adjective takes the ending of that gender: ein großer Garten, eine kleine Kammer, ein neues Buch. Ein has no plural, so for the plural you use kein, and kein takes the same endings: keine neuen Regenschirme.

After ein the noun has no article of its own

der kleine Laden, ein kleiner Laden.
Compare the two: der kleine Laden and ein kleiner Laden. The order is the same in both — article, adjective, noun — but the ending is not: -e after der, -er after ein. And in the second one the noun has no article of its own, because the ein stands in the place of the article. Write ein kleiner der Laden and it is wrong: ein and der are both articles, and one noun takes only one.

These are the basic forms: the accusative changes the masculine

der neue Tisch, ein neuer Tisch, den neuen Tisch, einen neuen Tisch.
All the forms in this lesson are the plain form, the one you meet first. In the accusative from Lesson 7 the masculine article changes: der becomes den, ein becomes einen, and the masculine adjective then ends in -en: den neuen Tisch, einen neuen Tisch. The feminine, the neuter and the plural keep their endings: eine alte Frau, ein altes Haus, die alten Autos.

The adjective in front of the noun

Read the first column: the noun with the definite article der, die or das, and the adjective in front of it. The second column is the same noun with ein — with kein in the plural — and there the adjective has a different ending. The third column gives the two endings, first the one after der, die and das, then the one after ein. The last column is the English meaning, for reading. All the forms are the plain ones: der alte Mann, ein alter Mann.

die Nachbarin, die Wohnung, der Vermieter, der Flur, die Küche, der Balkon, das Zimmer, das Bad, der Lebenslauf, die Anzeige, ruhig, hell.

The twelve words of this lesson: ten nouns, each with its article, and two adjectives. The nouns are the people and the rooms you talk about in a flat advert and in a CV; the two adjectives describe them best. Learn each noun with its article, and put the adjective in front of it the way this lesson does: die ruhige Nachbarin, die helle Küche.

  2. die Wohnungthe flat
  3. der Vermieterthe landlord
  4. der Flurthe hallway
  5. die Küchethe kitchen
  6. der Balkonthe balcony
  7. das Zimmerthe room
  8. das Badthe bathroom
  9. der Lebenslaufthe CV
  10. die Anzeigethe advert

Write

Write four sentences: two about the flat you are looking for, one about the people around it, and one about yourself for your CV. Put the adjective in front of the noun and give it the right ending.

The article in front of the adjective decides the ending: der, die and das give -e, and -en in the plural. Ein gives -er, -e or -es. After ein the noun has no article of its own: ein kleiner Laden, not ein kleiner der Laden.

I am looking for a small flat in Regensburg. The flat has a bright kitchen, a quiet room and a small bathroom. The landlord is friendly, and the neighbours are quiet. In my CV I write that I am reliable, punctual and friendly.

Ich suche eine kleine Wohnung in Regensburg. Die Wohnung hat eine helle Küche, ein ruhiges Zimmer und ein kleines Bad. Der Vermieter ist freundlich, und die Nachbarn sind ruhig. In meinem Lebenslauf schreibe ich, dass ich zuverlässig, pünktlich und freundlich bin.
