Akkusativ

The case that changes one article — and how to say what you do not want

What you will be able to do

Say what you want in a café: the accusative, and the difference between nicht and kein.

Zum Lesen · For reading

Im Café bestelle ich einen Kaffee und ein Brötchen. Der Kellner bringt die Speisekarte und dann den Kaffee. Ich trinke den Kaffee schwarz und esse das Brötchen. Ich trinke keinen Wein, aber das Wasser ist lecker.

In the café I order a coffee and a roll. The waiter brings the menu and then the coffee. I drink the coffee black and eat the roll. I do not drink any wine, but the water is tasty.

How the accusative works

Ich bestelle einen Kaffee und ein Brötchen. Der Kellner bringt den Kaffee und die Rechnung. Ich trinke den Kaffee und esse das Brötchen. Ich möchte keinen Zucker und keine Milch.

Four sentences, one case. The coffee, the roll and the bill are things you order — they stand in the accusative, and that is where der becomes den. Everything else stays as it is: die Rechnung, das Brötchen, eine Milch, kein Zucker. German has four cases in all; today you need only one new one.

The accusative is the case of what you order, drink or eat

Ich bestelle einen Kaffee. Ich trinke den Kaffee. Ich esse ein Brötchen.
Every German noun stands in one of four cases, and the case tells you what the noun does in the sentence. The accusative is the case of the direct object: the person or thing that something is done to. You order a coffee, you drink the coffee, you eat a roll — the coffee and the roll stand in the accusative.

Only the masculine changes: der becomes den

der Kaffee, den Kaffee. der Tee, den Tee. der Kuchen, den Kuchen. die Milch, die Milch. das Brot, das Brot. die Brötchen, die Brötchen.
Here is the whole case, and it is short: the masculine article changes from der to den, and nothing else changes. die stays die, das stays das, and in the plural the article stays die as well: die Brötchen, die Brötchen. If you changed only der into den, you have it right.

ein does not change

ein Kaffee, ein Tee, ein Brötchen, eine Milch, ein Wasser.
ein is the article for a thing you have not named yet, and it follows the gender, not the case: ein Kaffee, ein Brötchen, ein Wasser, eine Milch. In the accusative it is exactly the same as in the nominative: Ich bestelle einen Kaffee, ein Brötchen und eine Milch.

kein takes the place of the article

kein Kaffee, kein Brot, kein Wasser, keine Milch, keine Brezel.
kein is the negative article, and it stands exactly where the article would stand: ein Kaffee becomes kein Kaffee, eine Milch becomes keine Milch. In the accusative it changes with the case, just like the article: kein becomes keinen, and keine stays keine. So: Ich trinke keinen Kaffee. Ich nehme keine Milch.

nicht negates a word, kein negates a noun

Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß. Das ist nicht mein Wasser. Ich trinke keinen Kaffee.
Two ways to say 'not'. nicht goes directly in front of the word it negates: Der Kaffee ist nicht heiß. It can also stand at the end of the sentence: Ich trinke nicht. kein says 'no' about a noun and takes the article's place: Ich trinke keinen Kaffee, keine Milch. The rule of thumb: a noun with an article is negated with kein, everything else with nicht.

The articles in the accusative

der Kaffee, den Kaffee, der Tee, den Tee, der Saft, den Saft, das Wasser, das Wasser, die Milch, die Milch, das Brot, das Brot, der Kuchen, den Kuchen, die Brezel, die Brezel, die Speisekarte, die Speisekarte, die Rechnung, die Rechnung, der Kellner, den Kellner, das Brötchen, das Brötchen, die Brötchen, die Brötchen, die Kuchen, die Kuchen.

Read the first column and the second one: the same noun, the other case. Only the masculine changes — der Kaffee becomes den Kaffee, der Tee becomes den Tee, der Kuchen becomes den Kuchen. die and das stay exactly the same, and in the plural the article stays die: die Brötchen, die Brötchen. The third column is the negative article: where ein would stand, kein stands instead — ein Kaffee becomes kein Kaffee, eine Milch becomes keine Milch. In the plural there is no ein at all, so the last two rows show only the negative form: keine Brötchen, keine Kuchen. The fourth column is the English meaning, for reading.
