Verben im Präsens

The present tense of regular verbs — one stem, six endings

What you will be able to do

Conjugate a regular verb in the present tense and put the right ending on every person.

Zum Lesen · For reading

Ich wohne in einer schönen Stadt. Jeden Morgen gehe ich zu Fuß zur Arbeit. Am Nachmittag lerne ich Deutsch in der Sprachschule. Am Wochenende spiele ich mit Freunden im Park.

I live in a beautiful city. Every morning I walk to work. In the afternoon I learn German at the language school. At the weekend I play with friends in the park.

How the present tense works

Ich wohne. Du arbeitest. Er findet. Wir lernen. Ihr sucht. Sie spielen. Alle diese Verben folgen derselben Regel.

A regular verb is built from two parts: a stem that never changes and an ending that tells you who is doing the action. You take the stem off the infinitive once, and then you only add the ending of the person. The word order is the one you already know — the conjugated verb still stands in position 2.

First the stem: the infinitive without -en

wohnen, arbeiten, finden, fragen. Ich wohne. Du arbeitest. Er findet. Wir fragen.
Take the infinitive and take off its -en. What is left is the stem: the stem of wohnen is wohn, the stem of arbeiten is arbeit, the stem of finden is find. The stem never changes again. You only add the ending of the person to it, and the verb is finished.

Six endings, one for every person

ich wohne, du wohnst, er wohnt, wir wohnen, ihr wohnt, sie wohnen. ich lerne, du lernst, er lernt, wir lernen, ihr lernt, sie lernen.
The endings never change, whatever the verb is: -e for ich, -st for du, -t for er, sie and es, -en for wir, -t for ihr, and -en for sie and Sie. Only the person decides which ending you take.

After a stem in -t or -d an extra -e goes in

ich arbeite, du arbeitest, er arbeitet, wir arbeiten, ihr arbeitet, sie arbeiten. ich finde, du findest, er findet, wir finden, ihr findet, sie finden.
Some stems end in -t or -d, and there the ending is harder to say, so an extra -e goes in front of it: du arbeitest, er arbeitet, ihr arbeitet. Without the -e you would write arbeitst instead of arbeitest. The same happens with finden: du findest, ihr findet.

The ending does not change the word order

Heute arbeite ich. In der Stadt wohne ich. Am Bahnhof warte ich auf den Bus.
The ending goes on the verb, but the verb stays where it was. The conjugated verb still stands in position 2, exactly as you learned it: Heute arbeite ich — the time comes first and the subject steps behind the verb. Only the form of the verb changes, never its place in the sentence.

sie and Sie — two people, one ending

sie wohnen, Sie wohnen. Ich wohne hier. Wo wohnen Sie?
Two different people hide behind the same ending: „sie“ (she, they) and „Sie“ (you, polite). Both take -en, so the verb looks the same: sie wohnen, Sie wohnen. Only the big S tells them apart. In a polite question the Sie stands behind the verb: Wo wohnen Sie?

The present tense of twelve regular verbs

wohnen, arbeiten, gehen, lernen, suchen, finden, fragen, kaufen, machen, spielen, trinken, warten.

The first column is the infinitive. Read a row from left to right and the ending is visible in every column: -e for ich, -st for du, -t for er, sie and es, -en for wir, -t for ihr, and -en for sie and Sie. Three of the verbs carry the extra -e: the stems of arbeiten, warten and finden end in -t or -d, so du arbeitest, ihr arbeitet and du findest have an e in the middle that the other verbs do not have.

Write

Write three sentences about a day in the city: one that starts with a time, one that starts with a place, and one that starts with Ich. Use three different regular verbs.

Put the verb in position 2 and give it the ending of the subject: Heute arbeite ich. Take the -en off the infinitive and add the ending: arbeit plus -e gives arbeite. After a stem in -t or -d the extra -e goes in: du arbeitest, ihr arbeitet.

Today I work until half past five in the city. At the railway station I wait for the bus. I buy bread at the market and I learn German every evening.

Heute arbeite ich bis halb sechs in der Stadt. Am Bahnhof warte ich auf den Bus. Ich kaufe das Brot auf dem Markt und lerne jeden Abend Deutsch.
