Das Passiv

The passive — werden in position 2, the participle at the end

What you will be able to do

Say what happens in an office and on a form without naming the person who does it: werden plus the participle.

Zum Lesen · For reading

Im Amt liegen die Formulare für den Antrag auf dem Tisch. Jeden Morgen werden die Anträge von der Sachbearbeiterin geprüft und die Termine am Telefon vergeben. Die Bescheinigung wird mit der Post geschickt und der Antrag in der Akte abgeheftet.

In the office the forms for the application lie on the table. Every morning the applications are checked by the caseworker and the appointments are made by phone. The certificate is sent by post and the application is filed in the file.

How the passive is built

Der Brief wird geschrieben. Die Anträge werden geprüft. Das Formular wird ausgefüllt.

This lesson gives you the passive voice. It is the way German says what happens to a thing when the person who does it is unknown or does not matter: the letter is being written, the application is being checked, the form is being filled in. The shape is always the same: werden in position 2 and the participle at the end of the sentence.

The passive is werden plus the participle

Der Vertrag wird unterschrieben. Das Fenster wird geöffnet. Der Termin wird abgesagt.
In the active sentence the person who acts comes first: Herr Weber schreibt den Brief. In the passive the thing comes first, the conjugated form of werden stands in position 2, and the participle stands at the end of the sentence: Der Vertrag wird unterschrieben. The participle is built the way lesson 18 built it: schreiben gives geschrieben, prüfen gives geprüft, absagen gives abgesagt. Only one word changes in the middle of the sentence: werden takes the place of the active verb.

werden changes with the person, and stands in position 2

Ich werde gefragt. Du wirst informiert. Er wird abgeschickt. Wir werden eingeladen. Sie werden abgelehnt.
werden is a full verb, like haben and sein: it changes with the person — ich werde, du wirst, er wird, wir werden, sie werden — and it stands in position 2, exactly like every other verb in this course. The participle has no person of its own, so it walks to the end of the sentence. In Ich werde gefragt the subject comes first, then werden, and at the very end gefragt.

The person who acts can stay out — or come with von and the dative

Der Brief wird geschrieben. Der Brief wird von Herrn Weber geschrieben. Der Brief wird von einem Mitarbeiter geschrieben.
In the passive the person who does the action is often not mentioned at all: Der Brief wird geschrieben. The letter is being written — by whom? The sentence does not say, and that is exactly the point: what matters is the thing, not the person. When you do name the person, von comes with the dative: Der Brief wird von Herrn Weber geschrieben. Herrn is the dative of Herr, because von always takes the dative — the same rule as in lesson 21: von is one of the prepositions that always take the dative.

Careful: the same shape can also mean the future

Der Brief wird heute geschrieben. Der Brief wird morgen geschrieben.
One warning for English speakers: werden plus participle looks like the English future, and it can be. Der Brief wird morgen geschrieben means the letter will be written tomorrow. Der Brief wird heute geschrieben means the letter is being written now. Both sentences have the same shape; only the time word tells them apart. In this lesson we read the form as the present passive: what happens now, or what happens as a matter of course.

Offices speak in the passive, because the person is not the point

Die Anträge werden von der Sachbearbeiterin geprüft. Der Termin wird am Telefon vergeben. Die Bescheinigung wird mit der Post geschickt.
Forms, offices and institutions use the passive, because the person who acts changes from one sentence to the next and only the thing that happens matters: the application is checked, the appointment is made, the certificate is sent. When you speak about yourself, use the active voice: Ich stelle den Antrag. Ich schreibe den Brief.

One sentence, three ways to say it

Read the first column: the active sentence, with the person who acts in front of the verb. The second column is the same sentence in the passive — the thing comes first, werden stands in position 2, and the participle stands at the end. The third column brings the person back in, with von and the dative. The last column is the English meaning, for reading. Twelve sentences, three ways to say them.
