Anna sucht ein Zimmer in Regensburg und vergleicht drei Angebote. Das Zimmer bei der Universität ist so hell wie das Zimmer in der Altstadt. Das Angebot am Bahnhof ist günstiger als das Angebot in der Altstadt. Das Angebot bei der Universität ist am günstigsten, und ihre Freundin Sara empfiehlt das günstigste Angebot.

Anna is looking for a room in Regensburg and compares three offers. The room near the university is as bright as the room in the old town. The offer at the station is cheaper than the offer in the old town. The offer near the university is the cheapest, and her friend Sara recommends the cheapest offer.

How the comparison works

Das Angebot am Bahnhof ist günstiger als das Angebot in der Altstadt. Das Zimmer bei der Universität ist so hell wie das Zimmer in der Altstadt. Das Angebot bei der Universität ist am günstigsten.

Three words carry a comparison in German: als for a difference, so … wie for the same, and am plus -sten for the superlative. The adjective changes with them: günstig becomes günstiger, and the best of all is am günstigsten. Five rules, and then the forms in a table.

… als says that one thing is more than the other

Das Zimmer am Bahnhof ist größer als das Zimmer in der Altstadt. Der Zug ist teurer als das Auto.
als is the word for a difference: the first thing is more than the second one. The adjective takes the comparative ending -er: günstig becomes günstiger, groß becomes größer. The verb stays in position 2 and the clause with als stands at the end of the sentence.

so … wie says that two things are the same

Das Zimmer bei der Universität ist so hell wie das Zimmer in der Altstadt. Der Zug ist so schnell wie das Auto.
With so … wie you say that two things are the same. The adjective keeps its plain form between so and wie: so hell wie, so schnell wie. wie takes the place of als here, so the two words never stand in one sentence: so hell wie, never so hell als.

The superlative is am + the adjective + -sten

Das Angebot bei der Universität ist am günstigsten. Das Zimmer bei der Universität ist am größten. Das Zimmer am Bahnhof ist am hellsten.
The superlative says that one thing is the most of something. It is built with am, the adjective and the ending -sten: günstig gives am günstigsten, groß gives am größten. The adjective before -sten keeps its plain form — günstig, not günstiger. And you need am when you compare more than two things.

Before a noun the superlative ends in -e

das günstigste Angebot, das beste Angebot, die beste Wohnung, das hellste Zimmer.
In front of a noun you need the other form of the superlative, and it ends in -e: das günstigste Angebot, das beste Angebot. That is the form for the thing you name: Ich nehme das günstigste Angebot. The endings in the other cases come with the adjective declension — that is the next lesson.

Four adjectives do not add -er

gut — besser — am besten, hoch — höher — am höchsten, nah — näher — am nächsten, gern — lieber — am liebsten.
Most adjectives simply add -er: klein gives kleiner, neu gives neuer. These four do not: gut gives besser, hoch gives höher, nah gives näher, gern gives lieber. Learn them as a whole, the way you learned the five participles. gern is the one you need most often: Ich fahre lieber mit dem Bus — I prefer the bus.

The forms of the comparative and the superlative

groß — größer — am größten, klein — kleiner — am kleinsten, günstig — günstiger — am günstigsten, teuer — teurer — am teuersten, neu — neuer — am neuesten, alt — älter — am ältesten, hell — heller — am hellsten, ruhig — ruhiger — am ruhigsten, warm — wärmer — am wärmsten, lang — länger — am längsten, kurz — kürzer — am kürzsten, schnell — schneller — am schnellsten, hoch — höher — am höchsten, gut — besser — am besten.

Fourteen adjectives, one row each. The first column is the plain form, the second the comparative and the third the superlative with am. Most of them add -er: klein gives kleiner. The last two rows are the exceptions: hoch gives höher and gut gives besser.

Write

Write five sentences about three offers for a room: compare them, say which one is the cheapest, say which one you choose and recommend it.

A difference takes als: günstiger als. The same takes so … wie: so hell wie. The superlative is am plus -sten: am günstigsten — and before a noun it ends in -e: das günstigste Angebot. And the article belongs to the word: das Angebot, die Wohnung, der Preis.

I am looking for a room in Regensburg. The offer at the station is cheaper than the offer in the old town. The room near the university is as bright as the room in the old town. The offer near the university is the cheapest. I take the cheapest offer, recommend it and call the landlady.
