Der, die, das

The three articles — and why the article belongs to the word

What you will be able to do

Give every noun the right article, and keep that article with the word wherever it goes.

Zum Lesen · For reading

Das ist mein Zuhause. Ich wohne mit meiner Familie in einer kleinen Wohnung. Mein Vater heißt Thomas, meine Mutter heißt Claudia und meine Schwester heißt Lena. Im Wohnzimmer steht ein Sofa, im Schlafzimmer ein Bett und in der Küche ein Kühlschrank.

This is my home. I live with my family in a small flat. My father's name is Thomas, my mother's name is Claudia and my sister's name is Lena. In the living room there is a sofa, in the bedroom a bed and in the kitchen there is a refrigerator.

How the articles work

Der Tisch steht in der Küche. Die Lampe hängt über dem Tisch. Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. Der Vater liest die Zeitung, die Mutter trinkt Kaffee, und das Kind spielt.

German has three articles, and every noun has exactly one of them: der for masculine, die for feminine, das for neuter. You never meet a noun on its own — the article is part of the word. And in the plural there is only one article left: die.

Every noun has a gender, and the article belongs to the word

der Tisch, die Lampe, das Buch. Ich habe einen Tisch, eine Lampe und ein Buch.
A German noun is masculine (der), feminine (die) or neuter (das). The article is not something you put in front of a word — it is part of the word: you learn der Tisch, never Tisch on its own. When you mean one thing you do not name yet, ein takes the place of the article and follows the gender: ein Tisch, eine Lampe, ein Buch.

der — men, animals, days, months, seasons and time of day

der Vater, der Bruder, der Hund, der Montag, der Januar, der Sommer, der Morgen, der Kaffee.
Use der for male people and male animals, for the days of the week, the months, the seasons and the times of day: der Vater, der Bruder, der Hund, der Montag, der Januar, der Sommer, der Morgen. Most drinks are der too: der Kaffee, der Tee. And many words that end in -er or -en: der Computer, der Schlüssel.

die — women, animals, plants, and most words ending in -e

die Mutter, die Schwester, die Katze, die Blume, die Straße, die Lampe, die Schule.
Use die for female people and female animals, for plants, and for most nouns that end in -e: die Mutter, die Schwester, die Katze, die Blume, die Straße, die Lampe, die Schule. The ending is a help and not a law: der Kaffee also ends in -e and is still masculine, so when you are not sure, learn the word with its article.

das — everyday things, -chen and -lein, and nouns made from verbs

das Kind, das Haus, das Fenster, das Mädchen, das Häuschen, das Büchlein, das Essen, das Wohnen.
Use das for many everyday things: das Kind, das Haus, das Fenster. Everything that ends in -chen or -lein is das: das Mädchen, das Häuschen, das Büchlein. And every noun made out of a verb is das: das Essen (to eat), das Wohnen (to live).

The plural: the article is always die

die Väter, die Mütter, die Kinder, die Tische, die Bücher, die Häuser.
In the plural only one article is left: die. der Vater becomes die Väter, das Kind becomes die Kinder, der Tisch becomes die Tische. Most nouns add -n or -e, and some add nothing at all: die Kinder, die Bücher. Learn the plural together with the singular: ein Buch, die Büche.

The noun with its article and its plural

der Vater, die Väter, die Mutter, die Mütter, die Schwester, die Schwestern, der Bruder, die Brüder, das Kind, die Kinder, die Wohnung, die Wohnungen, das Zimmer, die Zimmer, die Küche, die Küchen, das Bett, die Betten, der Tisch, die Tische, die Lampe, die Lampen, das Buch, die Büche.

Read the first column: the noun with the article it always takes. In the second column the article is always die — that is the only change in the plural. Some nouns add an -n, some add an -e, and some add nothing at all: das Kind becomes die Kinder, der Tisch becomes die Tische, das Buch becomes die Büche. The third column is the English meaning, for reading.

The twelve words of this lesson. Every noun keeps its article here — that is the whole point of the lesson. The first six are your family, the last six are your home. And note die Eltern: it has no singular, and its article is die because it is a plural.

  2. die Mutterthe mother
  3. die Schwesterthe sister
  4. der Bruderthe brother
  5. das Kindthe child
  6. die Elternthe parents
  7. die Wohnungthe flat, the apartment
  8. das Zimmerthe room
  9. die Küchethe kitchen
  10. das Bettthe bed
  11. der Tischthe table
  12. das Fensterthe window

Write

Write five sentences about your family and your home. Use der, die and das at least once each, and write one sentence with a plural.

The article belongs to the word, so write the word with its article and never leave it out. In the plural the article is always die: die Brüder, die Schwestern, die Eltern. For a thing you do not name yet, use ein: ein Zimmer, eine Lampe.

My father's name is Thomas and my mother's name is Claudia. My sister Lena lives with me in a small flat. In the living room there are a sofa and a table. In the bedroom there is a bed, and the window is open. My brothers live in Regensburg.

Mein Vater heißt Thomas und meine Mutter heißt Claudia. Meine Schwester Lena wohnt mit mir in einer kleinen Wohnung. Im Wohnzimmer stehen ein Sofa und ein Tisch. Im Schlafzimmer steht ein Bett, und das Fenster ist offen. Meine Brüder wohnen in Regensburg.
