Geld und Reklamation

Paying, invoices, and the fixed words of a complaint

What you will be able to do

Pay, ask for an invoice, return a thing and complain — with the dative pronoun of es tut mir leid and the fixed formulae of a complaint.

Zum Lesen · For reading

I buy a shirt for twelve euros ninety-nine cents and pay by card. At home I see that the shirt is too expensive. The next day I bring it back and say: “Excuse me, I would like to exchange this shirt. Could you give me an invoice, please? Here is the receipt.” The shop assistant says: “I am sorry, but I cannot exchange the shirt. I will give you the money back.”

How money, invoices and complaints work

Das Kapitel handelt vom Bezahlen und von der Reklamation. Eine Rechnung hat einen Betrag und ein Datum. Eine Reklamation ist ein fester Satz, und die Sätze sind immer gleich.

This chapter is about paying and about complaining. An invoice has an amount and a date. A complaint is a fixed sentence, and the sentences never change. Underneath the fixed words there is one piece of grammar you have met before: the dative — the pronoun in es tut mir leid — and the word order of the sentence.

kosten and bezahlen — the two verbs of the price

Das Hemd kostet zwölf Euro neunundneunzig Cent. Das Paket kostet einhundertzwanzig Euro. Ich zahle bar. Ich bezahle die Rechnung.
Two verbs carry the money. kosten says how much a thing is: Das Hemd kostet zwölf Euro neunundneunzig Cent — the thing first, then the price. bezahlen says that you pay for something: Ich bezahle die Rechnung. With kosten the price has no article: zwölf Euro, never zwölf der Euro. With bezahlen the thing comes first and stands in the accusative: die Rechnung, den Kassenzettel. The money itself: der Euro is masculine, and one cent is masculine too — ein Cent, der Cent, as in lesson 3. Two of them are die Cent. A hundred cents are one euro. A price above ninety-nine is built the way you say it: einhundertzwanzig Euro.

Es tut mir leid — the person who is sorry stands in the dative

Es tut mir leid. Es tut dir leid. Es tut ihm leid. Es tut ihr leid. Es tut Ihnen leid.
The phrase that opens an apology has a fixed shape: es tut + a pronoun + leid. The pronoun says who is sorry, and it stands in the dative — mir, dir, ihm, ihr. Lesson 20 gave you the dative; this is where you use it in a real sentence. The polite Sie has its own dative form: Ihnen, so a shop says Es tut Ihnen leid and never Es tut Sie leid. And the verb stands at the end: Es tut mir leid.

A complaint has four pieces: excuse, problem, wish, proof

Entschuldigen Sie, ich möchte dieses Hemd umtauschen. Das Hemd ist mir zu teuer. Hier ist der Kassenzettel. Können Sie mir bitte eine Rechnung geben?
A complaint is not free speech. It has a frame, and the frame is what makes you sound polite. Four pieces. First the excuse: Entschuldigen Sie. Then the problem: Das Hemd ist mir zu teuer. Then the wish: Ich möchte dieses Hemd umtauschen. And the proof: Hier ist der Kassenzettel. You may leave a piece out, but the order never changes. The verb of the main clause stands in position 2 — Ich möchte, Das Hemd ist, Hier ist — and the polite question starts with the verb: Können Sie …?

umtauschen and zurückgeben — the two ends of a purchase

Ich möchte das Hemd umtauschen. Ich möchte das Geld zurückgeben. Der Kunde gibt die Ware zurück. Das Paket ist nicht angekommen.
Two verbs for the end of a purchase. umtauschen exchanges one thing for another — the same thing in another size or colour: Ich möchte das Hemd umtauschen. zurückgeben gives the money or the thing back: Ich möchte das Geld zurückgeben. Both are separable, so the prefix goes to the end of the sentence: ich tausche das Hemd um, ich gebe das Geld zurück. The word for the thing that went wrong is die Ware, and the word for the complaint you write is die Reklamation.

In a shop you say Sie

Entschuldigen Sie, ich habe eine Frage. Können Sie mir bitte eine Rechnung geben? Ich möchte Ihr Geld zurück. Vielen Dank für Ihre Hilfe.
A complaint goes to a shop or an office, and there you use Sie — the polite you from lesson 16. Not du, and never du and Sie in the same speech. The polite you has three forms: Sie for the subject, Ihnen for the dative and Ihr for the possessive. So the shop gives Sie eine Rechnung, and you say Es tut Ihnen leid and Ich möchte Ihr Geld zurück. With a friend the same sentence is much shorter: Entschuldige, ich möchte dein Geld zurück.
