Adjektive

The simple A1 form: the adjective behind the noun, without an ending

What you will be able to do

Say what the weather is like and what you wear: the adjective stands behind the noun and stays the same.

Zum Lesen · For reading

Das Wetter ist kalt. Der Himmel ist blau und der Wind ist stark. Im Sommer trage ich ein Hemd und im Winter eine Jacke. Meine Jacke ist warm, mein Schuh ist neu und mein Hemd ist weiß.

The weather is cold. The sky is blue and the wind is strong. In summer I wear a shirt and in winter a jacket. My jacket is warm, my shoe is new and my shirt is white.

How the adjective stands

Das Wetter ist kalt. Der Himmel ist blau. Die Jacke ist warm. Der Schuh ist neu. Das Brot ist frisch.

Five rules for the adjective. In the form of this lesson it stands behind the noun and it does not change at all: no ending, no case, no gender. German has a second form as well, with the adjective in front of the noun and an ending — that one comes later. Today you learn the simple one.

The adjective stands behind the noun and stays the same

Der Tag ist warm. Die Nacht ist kalt. Die Sonne ist warm. Das Wasser ist kalt.
An adjective says what a thing is like. Here it stands behind the noun, and it does not change: kalt stays kalt. The same adjective fits every noun — der Tag ist warm, die Nacht ist kalt, die Jacke ist warm. There is no ending on it in this form.

The verb comes between the noun and the adjective

Die Katze ist klein. Der Tisch ist alt. Das Buch ist neu.
Every sentence needs a verb, and in these sentences the order is always the same: the noun, then the verb, then the adjective. Die Katze ist klein. The verb stands in position 2, right after the subject, and the adjective waits at the end of the sentence.

The plural works the same way

Die Kinder sind klein. Die Jacken sind warm. Die Tage sind lang.
When there is more than one, the noun gets the plural and the verb changes to sind — but the adjective stays exactly as it is: die Kinder sind klein, die Jacken sind warm, die Tage sind lang. klein, warm and lang do not grow an ending.

German also has the other form: the adjective in front, with an ending

ein großes Haus, ein kalter Tag, eine warme Jacke.
Do not be surprised: German can also put the adjective in front of the noun — ein großes Haus, ein kalter Tag, eine warme Jacke. There it takes an ending, and the ending follows the noun: das Haus gives -es, der Tag gives -er, die Jacke gives -e. That comes later in this course. This lesson keeps the simple form: the adjective behind the noun, with no ending at all.

One adjective or two

Der Himmel ist blau und klar. Das Brot ist frisch und lecker.
You can use two adjectives at once. Then und comes between them: Der Himmel ist blau und klar, das Brot ist frisch und lecker. The und changes nothing — blau and klar stay exactly as they are, without an ending.

The noun, and the adjective behind it

das Wetter kalt, das Brot frisch, der Tag warm, die Nacht kalt, der Himmel blau, der Wind stark, die Sonne warm, die Blume rot, die Jacke warm, der Mantel dick, das Hemd weiß, die Hose blau, der Schuh neu, der Frühling mild, der Sommer warm, der Herbst kühl, der Winter kalt.

Read the first column: the noun with the article it always takes. The second column is the adjective, and it stands behind the noun — that is the order of this lesson. The adjective does not change: warm after der Sommer, warm after die Jacke. The third column is the English meaning, for reading.

Write

Write five sentences: one about the weather, one about a season, and three about the clothes you wear. Put the adjective behind the noun and leave it unchanged.

The order is always noun, verb, adjective: Das Wetter ist kalt. The adjective keeps its form: kalt, warm, neu, blau. And remember the other form, with the adjective in front of the noun: ein großes Haus, eine warme Jacke.

The weather is cold and the sky is blue. The summer is warm and the winter is cold. In winter I wear a jacket and a scarf. My jacket is warm and my shoe is new. The bread is fresh.

Das Wetter ist kalt und der Himmel ist blau. Der Sommer ist warm und der Winter ist kalt. Im Winter trage ich eine Jacke und einen Schal. Meine Jacke ist warm und mein Schuh ist neu. Das Brot ist frisch.
